Professional Development Workshop in Engineering Optimization
February 29th - March 3rd, 2000
(Under the Continuing Education Program of IIT)

               A novel feature of this workshop is real life problem solving session to be discused as case studies.IMG will attempt to provide complete solution to the problems brought by participants by resorting to the tools of Mathematical Modelling and Optimization.

                Optimization or the urge for efficiency, in a general sense, involves the determination of a highest or lowest value over some range. What is desired is a matter of statement. Thus a problem can be maximized for profit or minimized for loss. As engineering becomes more advanced and the business and industrial world more competitive, the methods for optimizing become more exact and the rewards increasingly great. Economic optimization, or ENGINEERING OPTIMIZATION, is therefore a necessity of today and tomorrow. This workshop has been exclusively designed with a view to cater to the necessities in Optimization Technology.

The workshop will give a wide exposure of Optimization Techniques including the following:

                The prime objective of the workshop is to share with the participants the power of state-of-the-art Optimization Techniques that are available in the form of software packages. It is also intended to describe to the participants the systematic approach of optimization, which includes the problem definition, its mathematical formulation, selection of a suitable optimization method (algorithm), and a detailed analysis of the solution obtained. One of the main objectives of this workshop is to provide an exposure to the capabilities of an optimization software called OPTIMIZE, designed and developed at IIT Bombay.

Scope of workshop
                The scope of this workshop includes Problem Solving and discussion of Case Studies from various engineering disciplines covering a variety of applications such as:

Salient Features
  1. CAI Enviornment
  2. A Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) environment will be used. For every two participants, one machine will be made available. A Digital Data Projector will be used for on-line projection.

  3. Lecture Material
  4. The contents of the workshop are grouped into several modules, each of which covers a class of optimization techniques. All the lecture material for a given module will be prepared in the form of overhead foils, a copy of which will be given to each participant. The courseware will also include discussions on each Case Study to be presented in the workshop.

  5. Optimization Software
  6. All PCs will be mounted with a software package called OPTIMIZE, especially designed to demonstrate various optimization techniques through Sample Problems, Case Studies and User-defined Problems. This will enable each participant of this workshop to carry out parametric studies, and also solve their own optimization problems, if desired.

  7. Case Studies
  8. The discussion of each optimization technique will be preceded by a Case Study, which will provide motivation for learning a given technique.

  9. Tutorial Sessions
  10. Tutorial sessions will be conducted for each module in the workshop, to enhance the understanding of mathematical optimization techniques. These tutorial sessions will be supplemented with hands-on experience on OPTIMIZE software.

  12. The lectures in each module will be conducted using the following unified format, which is aptly suited for practicing engineers from the industry:
