Title:: Face Rings of Simplicial Complexes
Abstract: We will begin with Stanley's formula for the Hilbert series of the face ring of a simplicial complex. Later we will prove that the face rings of shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay. If time permits, we shall sketch the solution by Stanley of the Upper Bound Conjecture.
