Title: Algebraic Groups - I

Abstract: This is the first of two two hour lectures intended to survey some of the notions and facts about linear algebraic groups. These talks will be based on Borel's paper "Linear algebraic groups" (Algebraic Groups and Discontinuous Subgroups, Proc. Sympos. Pure Math., Boulder, Colo., 1965, pp. 3--19). The emphasis will be on examples, keeping in mind beginning students interested in Number Theory.
