Title: Diophantine Approximation on Varieties

Abstract: I will explain a dynamical approach to Diophantine approximation developed by Dani, Kleinbock, Margulis and others. I will then discuss some recent work which explores connections between the Diophantine properties of a symmetric variety and the automorphic spectrum of the ambient group. This is joint with Gorodnik.
