Title: Implementing Quantum Gates Using the Heisenberg Ferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chain

Speaker: Jaideep Mulherkar, University of California Davis

Abstract: Quantum spin models are a natural model for quantum computation. I will introduce the ferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ quantum spin model with kink boundary conditions and will talk about an interesting new result that we obtained regarding the presence of isolated eigenvalues in the low lying spectrum of the XXZ model. Using these results I will demonstrate the construction of quantum gates using the time evolution the XXZ chain under the influence of an external control field. The gate results are obtained using optimal control theory and simulation results will be presented using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm. I will also briefly discuss the area law of entanglement and its connection with the accuracy of DMRG.
