Title: CSE - 3rd Approach and a New Curriculum

Speaker: Rolf Jeltsch, ETH Zurich

Abstract: In classical research, one develops theories to describe phenomena and verifies the theories by experiments. With the development of modern computers, with extreme computational power, one is able to simulate, using very complicated and nonlinear models, complex phenomena. This lead to the third approach in science and technology, CSE. ETH has started a diploma curriculum, in 1997, to educate students in CSE. This program has been continuously expanded and is since 2008 a full Bachelor and a Master program.

In this lecture, we present the need of CSE and give examples. Then the basic aims of the curricula are presented.
