Title: The Narasimhan-Seshadri Theorem revisited

Abstract: The Narasimhan-Seshadri Theorem recently completed 50 years of its existence. It has been one of the most influential theorems in algebraic geometry over the past several decades. In this talk, I will give a popular introduction to the theorem, and then sketch a new proof which is based on fundamental techniques of modern algebraic geometry, replacing some of the analytic ideas in the original proof.
