Title:A posteriori error estimation in finite element analysis

Abstract: In this talk, an introduction to the topic of a posteriori error estimation of finite element approximations of elliptic partial differential equations is presented. The residual method for a model Poisson problem is explained with details. The implicit and averaging methods for error estimation are introduced. The strategy of making the computational method adaptive with feedback from computational process is explained. Finally, the laser surface hardening of steel problem, in which a posteriori error estimates steer the adaptive refinement process is illustrated.
