Title:Representations of the general linear and symmetric groups

Speaker: Dr. Upendra Kulkarni

Abstract: I will show how irreducible algebraic representations of the general linear group can be constructed in an elementary way using only multilinear algebra. I will also discuss some interesting connections between representation theories of the general linear and symmetric groups. Time permitting, I will sketch what happens in positive characteristic.
