Title:Continuous versions of eigenvalue inequalities

Speaker: V. S. Sunder, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai

Abstract:A fundamental inequality regarding the (real) eigenvalues of self-adjoint matrices is the so-called minimax theorem which is an extremal characterisation of the eigenvalues. There are useful generalisations of this, notably due to Wielandt and Ky Fan. After a discussion of these theorems, the bulk of the talk will be devoted to joint work (see arXiv:1210.7581) with my student Madhushree Basu on `continuous generalisations' of these results in the context of free probability theory. (No knowledge of free probability will be assumed, nor needed to understand this talk.)
