Title: Topology of Lie Groups

Abstract: In the first meeting of the Seminar, held on Thursday, 9th January, it was decided that the subsequent meetings will be held on Mondays between 15:30 and 17:30 hours. It was also decided that knowledge of basic Lie group theory will be assumed, though this will not be necessary to begin with. After that, Anant Shastri spoke on Topology of Lie groups. Connectivity of the general linear groups was discussed. Also, some basic notation for matrix groups such as orthogonal, unitary and symplectic groups were introduced.

In the next talk, we shall discuss polar decomposition, and fundamental group. Anybody who is keen on this is welcome even if he/she has missed the first meeting, A good reference is: Chapter 9 in Elements of Differential by Anant R. Shastri, which can be read independent of the remaining chapters in the book.
