Title: Number of rational points on varieties over finite fields and applications

Abstract: In this series of talks, we would study various results concerning maximum possible number of rational points on (not necessarily irreducible) varieties defined over a finite field and its application to computing higher weights of Reed-Muller codes. In the first talk, I would like to present some equivalent formulations of the question, answer the question in small cases and develop some basic ingredients which will be useful in the due course.
