The main tools and general notions necessary to reduce a problem to characteristic $p$ will be discussed in this talk. It is based on chapter 2 of the excellent resource "Tight Closures in Characterisitic zero" by Hochster and Huneke. We will be restricting ourselves to the case of affine algebras since it is more accessible.
