Title: Mapping Class Groups: Teichmüller Space and Representation Varieties

Abstract: In previous talks, we discussed Teichmüller space from the viewpoint of complex structures. In this talk, we will adopt a representation-theoretic approach. We will first establish the natural bijection between the Teichmüller space of a surface and the space of Fuchsian representations of its fundamental group, up to conjugation.
Motivated by this, we will consider the variety of representations into a Lie group and discuss its geometric interpretation in terms of conjugacy classes and flat principal bundles.
