Abstract: In the first talk, we will look at some applications of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In the second we will give an outline of the proof by Huneke and Lyubeznik that the absolute integral closure of a noetherian local domain that is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring is a (big) Cohen-Macaulay algebra over it.
