For a faculty position

The Department of Mathematics invites applications in all fields of mathematics from strong researchers having a record of high quality research.

You can see a list of research interests of faculty members here.

Advertisement and Application form: Several important details (for example, the advertisement and an information sheet) can be found here. The information sheet contains details of qualifications and experience required for various positions, salary structure, general information on grants received from the institute for new faculty, and some information on the facilities available at the institute and on campus. More information regarding facilities is available here.

You can find the application form here.

Selection Procedure: The head will forward your application to the department policy committee for initial screening. If initial screening is cleared, then faculty feedback is sought and referees are contacted for letters. Once the letters are received, the completed file is sent to the department policy committee for further feedback. Based on the feedback, a decision to call the candidate for a talk is taken. Further feedback is sought after the talk, based on which the department policy committee decides to recommend the candidate to the institute selection committee. The entire process can take between 2 to 6 months.

Contact: Please write to head.math@iitb.ac.in for any queries.

For an Institute Postdoctoral fellowship

  • Applicants should have submitted their thesis at the time of applying for the position of Institute Postdoctoral Fellow.

  • The applicant should first contact a member of the Faculty of the Department of Mathematics in the relevant area of research and ascertain that he or she is willing to serve as a mentor for the applicant.

  • You can see a list of research interests of faculty members here.

How to apply:The application form is available here. A PDF version of the filled application form, CV, Research statement and Teaching statement must be emailed to ipdf_applications@math.iitb.ac.in as a zipped folder. The CV should include the list of publications and the names and contact addresses of at least 3 Referees. Please mention in the e-mail the name of the faculty member who will serve as the mentor and also please arrange to have the proposed mentor write directly to ipdf_applications@math.iitb.ac.in that he or she is willing to be a mentor for you.

The Department will invite selected candidates to give a talk on their research. A final recommendation to the Institute will be made after assessing the talk, the letters of recommendation and the overall academic and research records of the candidate.

More information: Postdocs will be required to serve as teaching assistants in one course every semester.

You may apply directly for an Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship, which offers an extremely generous salary. You may also apply to the department if you already have a fellowship, for example, from NBHM or SERB. Irrespective of the fellowship, the selection procedure is the same for all candidates.

    Fellowship

    Experience Fellowship Amount
    (including 24% HRA)
    Fresh Ph.D.
    Rs. 80,600/- p.m.
    Ph.D. + 1 year experience

No on-campus accommodation will be provided.

Currently post doctoral fellows are not elligible for on-campus accommodation. A few quarters are reserved for married fellows, though the waiting list for these may be quite large. It is, however, possible to rent a room in the Powai market area, which is just across the road, or further away, within a radius of 2 to 4kms and with an advantage of better and cheaper housing, near Kanjur Marg or Bhandup.

You can also find some useful information regarding the Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship here.
